Saxony: Minister of the Interior sees no signs of a furious winter

Dresden (dpa/sn) - Despite the numerous weekly demonstrations in many cities in Saxony, Interior Minister Armin Schuster sees no signs of a winter of anger. Right-wing extremist groups are trying to hijack large events that they would not be able to do themselves, the CDU politician said in a debate in the state parliament on Thursday. "Otherwise they are weak on the street." Around 100 events with a total of up to 35,000 participants take place in Saxony every week. However, these were mostly peaceful. The number of participants is also declining.

The topics of the demonstrations are very different, said Schuster. Among other things, they addressed the corona pandemic, migration and the energy crisis. The aim of the extremes is to create connectivity to large groups and to show their presence with flags and posters. "It hasn't really worked out so far," said Schuster, assessing the current situation at the meeting.

According to Schuster, however, the hateful rhetoric of the extreme groups is problematic: "I think that's extremely dangerous." The goal of the government is therefore to secure the social discourse of the center. At the same time, the extremes should be made "as difficult as possible on the rule of law basis". This relates primarily to the purchase of real estate, right-wing rock concerts and meetings.
