Saxony: Petition against deportation comes to the state parliament

Chemnitz/Dresden (dpa/sn) - The impending deportation of a Vietnamese who has been living in Germany for 35 years will probably soon occupy the state parliament. Parliament President Matthias Rößler wants to accept the refugee council's petition on September 2, the state parliament administration announced on Friday. However, the petitioner has not yet confirmed the date.

The online petition started a week ago and had around 75,800 supporters by Friday afternoon. The concern is to prevent a deportation of Pham Phi Son, who lives in Chemnitz with his wife and child. According to the information, he came to the GDR in 1987 as a contract worker. In the meantime, however, he had been back in Vietnam for more than half a year and had thus violated deadlines in Germany. The case had already dealt with courts, as well as the country's hardship commission - without success.

According to information from the state parliament, the number of supporters is irrelevant for the submission of a petition. The Petitions Committee then obtains further opinions, but in the end the plenary decides. It can ask the state government to act in a certain way. The process until then takes at least three months, but sometimes a year and longer, it said.
