Saxony: protection of the constitution: confrontations at demos possible

Leipzig (dpa/sn) - The Saxon Office for the Protection of the Constitution does not rule out confrontations between the various camps in the planned demonstrations on Monday in Leipzig. The situation is confusing in terms of ideological classification, and a high degree of emotionalization is also evident, said the President of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Dirk-Martin Christian, on Friday.

A total of seven rallies from left and right have been announced. The left around Bundestag member Sören Pellmann are planning the largest demo for affordable energy prices with 3,000 to 4,000 participants.

According to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, various extremist actors in Saxony are trying to exploit inflation and the energy crisis for their agenda. "A key protagonist is once again the right-wing extremist micro-party Free Saxony," says Christian. She tries to take up the topic of "autumn of anger". "The fact that the pandemic and the war are now being followed by an energy crisis with potentially significant economic consequences for the population is not only an ideal prerequisite for the Free Saxons to activate and mobilize the latent protest potential in the population."

The Free Saxons registered a rally in the immediate vicinity of the left-wing demo on Monday. According to the regulatory office of the city of Leipzig, they have announced about ten participants. However, under the motto "March separately, strike together" it is widely advertised and it is pretended that it is a matter of solidarity. The left are opposed to this. According to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the political cross-front from right to left is only "a wishful thinking".

The Office for the Protection of the Constitution also sees potential for conflict for Monday in the fact that there is also mobilization in the left-wing extremist spectrum - again against the right.

It is currently not possible to predict whether there will really be a "hot autumn". "Whether right-wing extremists in Saxony will succeed in building on the mobilization successes of the anti-corona protests cannot yet be predicted with the necessary certainty," explained Christian. That depends, among other things, on how sustainable the relief announced by politicians is. There are no indications for the assumption that there are regular mass demonstrations or even acts of violence.
