Saxony: Refugee students: First a language course, then studies

Numerous students from the Ukraine want to continue their studies in Saxony. But before that, a few hurdles have to be cleared.

Dresden (dpa/sn) - Several hundred refugee students from Ukraine are taking language courses to prepare for studying in Saxony. The Ministry of Science in Dresden announced that there were a total of 820 registrations for language courses at universities and other educational institutions.

In general, Ukrainian students are very interested in continuing their studies in Saxony. However, because most of them would first have to acquire the necessary language skills, this is not yet reflected in the high number of enrollments at universities.

There are "extensive activities" at the universities to enable Ukrainians to continue their studies, explained Science Minister Sebastian Gemkow (CDU). In addition to the language barriers, however, the higher education systems in both countries differ in many areas. The refugees must therefore also attend an additional preparatory college in order to familiarize themselves with the German requirements.

According to the ministry, there is also "an increased need to deal with war-related psychosocial problems" among Ukrainian students. The student unions responded with additional advisory services. In addition, many university members continue to take care of the Ukrainians on a voluntary basis and help with everyday problems such as dealing with authorities.
