Saxony: Rößler: Resolutely oppose authoritarian efforts

Dresden (dpa/sn) - Saxony's state parliament president Matthias Rößler called on the fateful November 9th to resolutely oppose more authoritarian efforts. "Let's protect the rule of law and parliamentarism," Rößler demanded. November 9 must be a day of remembrance that will continue to determine political action in the future, he said on Wednesday at the beginning of the state parliament session in Dresden.

"The story of November 9th clearly shows us the devastation to which totalitarian rule leads. But it also proves that a people can be strong enough to overthrow a dictatorship," he said, referring to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The day is demanding from the Germans a moment of pause and remembrance.

"November 9 combines light and shadow. It has the heavy burden of the pogrom night of 1938, the National Socialist murder rage against the Jews and thus marks the beginning of the Holocaust with the delusional goal of their annihilation," Rößler emphasized. "For that reason alone, this day will always be a black day." At the same time, this day stands for the genesis of parliamentary democracy.
