Saxony: Service court: hearing on the Jens Maier case adjourned

Dresden (dpa/sn) - The service court for judges in Saxony has postponed the oral hearing scheduled for September 22 on the transfer of the judge and ex-Bundestag member of the AfD, Jens Maier, to early retirement. The chairman had thus complied with a corresponding request from his lawyer, as a spokeswoman announced on Friday. This justified the step with the effort required to deal with the extensive documents submitted by the Ministry of Justice. A new date is not yet known.

The Leipzig service court for judges, which deals with questions of service law, temporarily prohibited Maier from conducting official business in March. It granted an urgent application from the Ministry of Justice. The decision is limited in time until a decision is made on a second ongoing application - namely to retire Maier. A judge "must behave not only inside but also outside of his office, including in political activities, in such a way that trust in his integrity and independence is not endangered," the statement said.

Maier is classified as a right-wing extremist by the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution. The former AfD member of the Bundestag had lost his mandate in the 2021 election and then wanted to return to the judiciary.
