Dresden (dpa / sn) - As in the previous year, there have been comparatively few outbreaks of avian influenza in Saxony. A total of 769 animals from two stocks in the Bautzen district had to be killed, as the Ministry of Social Affairs announced in Dresden on Wednesday. These were laying hens, chickens, geese and ducks. In wild birds, on the other hand, there has not yet been an outbreak of the virus this year.
Social Affairs Minister Petra Köpping (SPD) emphasized that poultry farming in Saxony was safe despite the outbreaks: "But I ask all poultry farmers to check the hygiene measures in their companies as a precaution and to adapt them if necessary."
Last year, between November 2021 and May 2022, two companies also reported outbreaks of the disease. There were a total of 36 failures in wild birds. "We can never estimate how much avian influenza is introduced via wild birds," said Köpping.
