Saxony: Start of construction for a new Mulde bridge over the A14 near Grimma

Grimma (dpa / sn) - On Monday, construction work on a new motorway bridge began on the Mulde near Grimma. The structure is intended to replace the old Mulde Bridge from the 1970s, as announced by the long-distance road construction company Deges. Completion is planned for 2027. The project costs of 81 million euros are borne entirely by the federal government.

The constantly increasing traffic on the A14, especially trucks, left its mark on the old composite steel bridge. It was always repaired. However, structural inspections had shown that a replacement was necessary in the long term.

The new bridge should be 361 meters long. Like the existing one, it will lead over the Mulde in around 21 meters. Four lanes are also planned on the new bridge, plus one hard shoulder in each direction. The A14 connects Leipzig and Dresden. The motorway is also important for the European transport network.
