Saxony: The situation in Saxon clinics is tense

Although the corona hospitalization rate is currently low, many clinics in Saxony are again working at the limit. The holiday season could exacerbate the situation even further.

Leipzig (dpa/sn) - Corona cases in the workforce, operations made up for, a lack of nursing staff: The current situation in the Saxon hospitals is tense. "The economic situation and staff shortages make the situation more difficult," said the deputy managing director of the Saxon hospital company, Friedrich R. Munich, on request. At the moment there is an increasing sickness rate in the Saxon hospitals.

The standard supply is therefore initially guaranteed. "However, future performance restrictions cannot be ruled out if the situation with staff shortages worsens," stressed Munich. In addition to sickness-related staff absences, the upcoming holiday season could also make a significant contribution to aggravating the situation, as this carries a risk of a further increase in the number of infections. The hospital company did not initially have any reliable figures.

Some clinics are already sounding the alarm. In the St. Georg Leipzig Clinic, around a quarter fewer beds are currently being operated compared to the pre-Corona period. The reason is a lack of staff and the introduction of the minimum nursing staff, said a spokeswoman. In addition, there were always failures due to staff suffering from Covid. The shortage affects the ability to act, especially in the intensive care areas and during operations. The search for specialists and the filling of vacant positions is tedious.

According to the hospital, more nursing staff than ever before in the last two years have made a conscious decision to leave nursing. In view of the increasing number of infections, the situation remains tense overall. "So far, however, we have been able to avoid the closure of entire stations thanks to the dedicated work of our employees," it said.

According to the Ministry of Health, the Covid-19 diseases do not currently represent a heavy burden on inpatient care due to the comparatively lower hospitalization rate of the currently prevailing variants have to wear, continue to be big," it said on request.
