Saxony: Thunderstorms bring heavy rain locally in Saxony

Leipzig (dpa/sn) - A storm front has brought heavy rainfall to some places in Saxony since Friday. The 24-hour maximum was measured at 60.2 liters per square meter in Burkau-Kleinhänchen in Upper Lusatia, as reported by the German Weather Service in Leipzig on Saturday.

There were also heavy thunderstorms in southern Saxony: 55.8 liters were registered in Frankenberg, 51.6 in Chemnitz and 47.2 in Marienberg. However, the storms did not hit all regions equally. In Pegau in the district of Leipzig, only 0.3 liters of precipitation were measured.

The amount of rain is a long way from the previous records. The peak value in Burkau-Kleinhänchen is around 131.1 liters. It dates from 1978.
