Saxony: Winter comeback: Snow fell everywhere in the Free State

The month of February has seen the most snow in recent years. Nevertheless, given the mild temperatures, spring fever has also prevailed in Saxony recently. Then winter came back.

Leipzig/Dresden (dpa/sn) - Winter made a comeback in Saxony over the weekend. As the German weather service announced, snow fell everywhere in the Free State. However, their length of stay varies greatly. While it had already melted again on the streets in northern Saxony and in the Leipzig region on Sunday morning and only adorned meadows and roofs in places, it remained white above 600 meters. On the country's highest elevation, the Fichtelberg, at 1215 meters, 40 centimeters of snow were measured, in Carlsfeld it was 27 and in Marienberg 18 centimeters.

"It's nothing special in February," said Cathleen Hickmann, meteorologist on duty at the German Weather Service, on request. In the statistics of previous years, February was the snowiest month. "So it's not surprising if there's a winter comeback now. However, many people had probably already done with winter internally." In view of the mild temperatures in the course of the month so far, spring fever has already set in for most of them. With temperatures of only two to three degrees during the day, it will take a while.

First of all, it should be crispy cold again on Monday night. Gaps in the cloud cover contribute to cooling, it said. In the lowlands, temperatures of minus five to minus seven degrees Celsius could therefore occur, in the mountains even down to minus ten degrees. The snow cover should continue to disappear in the coming days with slightly plus degrees.

Not all drivers could cope with driving snow and ice on Saxony's roads at the weekend. On the Autobahn 4 near Hohenstein-Ernstthal, a car collided with the central barrier on Saturday evening. The 58-year-old driver was not injured. According to the police, he was driving without winter tires. On the Autobahn 72 near Zwickau-Ost, a semi-trailer truck slid into the right-hand crash barrier on Saturday evening in the direction of Chemnitz. It was loaded with two construction vehicles and, according to the police, had worn tires. The highway was completely closed for two and a half hours for the rescue.
