Thuringia: 39 major construction projects this year - capacity problems

Erfurt (dpa/th) - Thuringia is working on 39 major state construction projects this year at a cost of millions. The spectrum ranges from a new training building and a vehicle hall for the state fire brigade school in Bad Köstritz to the construction of a data center and a lecture hall and seminar building at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, said Infrastructure Minister Susanna Karawanskij (left) on Tuesday in Erfurt at the presentation the country's building plan.

Other projects include the refurbishment of the gymnasium and outdoor facilities of the Oberhof sports school, the refurbishment of the Erfurt district court or the construction of a new teaching and research building for the dual university in Gera.

For the 39 larger projects alone, 114 million euros have been earmarked in this year's state budget. Overall, the construction budget is 163 million euros, because there is also repair and maintenance work or a number of smaller projects.

Karawanskij referred to problems in the implementation of the projects due to a lack of construction capacity, material and manpower. "We are dealing with incredible construction price increases." This mainly applies to steel and wood. The minister expects that spending on the construction budget will have to be increased by 20 to 25 percent in the coming year in order to be able to react to the cost increases in ongoing and planned projects. The priority for her is that projects that have been started are completed.
