Thuringia: Fridays for Future complains about the criminalization of activists

Erfurt (dpa/th) - With a short road blockade in Erfurt, demonstrators from Fridays for Future also drew attention to the situation of climate activists from the organization "Last Generation". Not only their followers are now being criminalized, said a spokeswoman at a Fridays for Future rally in the Thuringian state capital.

In the meantime, there are raids against climate activists in Germany, "as they would be appropriate for Reich citizens and right-wing extremists". However, the German state does not take decisive action against such groups, unlike against climate activists. "It's just out of proportion," said the spokeswoman.

Several hundred participants in the Fridays for Future demonstration march sat down on the road at a central crossroads in Erfurt for a few minutes and put a hand on the ground - a symbolic gesture to show solidarity with the "last generation". In recent months, their followers have repeatedly stuck themselves at crossroads in German cities, most recently in Jena and Erfurt.

Several members of the "Last Generation" are now being prosecuted for their controversial protest actions.

Demonstrators from Fridays for Future accused federal politicians of failure in energy and climate policy. "The real blockers are in the government and in the opposition." This would rob young people of their future. Young people also have to defend themselves against this kind of politics through civil disobedience.
