Thuringia: Helmholtz Institute with a new research building

Jena (dpa/th) - With investments of around 8.9 million euros, the Helmholtz Institute in Jena has received a new research building. The extension was officially put into operation on Thursday after two and a half years of construction. According to the Ministry of Infrastructure, the institute now has around 550 square meters of new office and laboratory space.

This also includes an underground laboratory with a high-power laser. Laser experiments with increased requirements for radiation protection will be possible there in the future. With the new research building, the scientists in Jena could start a new chapter in laser research. New insights into laser particle acceleration and novel imaging methods are expected.

The state bore the total cost of construction. According to the information, around 100 employees currently work for the institute. The Jena institution, founded in 2009, is a branch of the Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt.
