Thuringia: Homemade explosive device detonated in a residential building

Nordhausen (dpa/th) - A self-made explosive device was detonated on Thursday evening in a hallway of an apartment building in Nordhausen. A 40-year-old man was responsible for the detonation, the police said on Friday. He had previously rioted loudly in the hallway. The stairwell was only "slightly" damaged by the explosive device. In the meantime, however, the hallway had been evacuated due to the danger of possible further explosives. After possible further dangers could be excluded, the house entrance was released again, it said.

The man was still in police custody on Friday because "further crime equipment" had been found and confiscated during a search, a spokesman said. The police have taken over the investigation. The man's motivation for building and detonating the explosive device is still completely unclear.

According to initial findings, the incident is not related to the home-made explosives found at the Straußfurt train station last Sunday, the spokesman said. There is also no suspicion of politically motivated crime in this case.
