Bavaria: Incidence below 1000 again: High burden on hospitals

Munich/Berlin (dpa/lby) - The incidence of corona in Bavaria is declining slightly. On Friday morning, the value reported by the Robert Koch Institute for the Free State fell back below the 1000 mark. Specifically, it went down by 54.2 to 962.4. In Munich, which had experienced a particularly strong increase during and after the Oktoberfest, the numbers even fell significantly.

On Friday, the incidence in the Bavarian capital was 1064.6 - that means a decrease of more than 400 within two days. The city's health department said there was no backlog and the numbers were up to date. "We suspect that the peak has already been passed and the current wave is already breaking again."

However, not all corona indicators in Bavaria are falling: the number of reported hospital admissions with corona increased again on Friday and, according to the State Office for Health and Food Safety, is 2462 across Bavaria within seven days. That is significantly more than on Thursday and just below the all-time high reported on Tuesday, to which holiday effects may have contributed.

The load on the intensive care units is also still high: the nationwide intensive care register listed (as of Thursday) only 47 intensive care units in Bavaria that reported regular operation. 83 reported restricted operations, 46 partially restricted operations.

The incidence only provides a very incomplete picture of the number of infections. Experts assume a high number of cases not recorded by the RKI - mainly because not all infected people have a PCR test done. Only positive PCR tests count in the statistics. The actual values are therefore likely to be significantly higher. Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) said on Friday in relation to the nationwide situation that he was assuming three to four times as much.

Nationwide, Bavaria's incidence is well above average and in second place behind Saarland. The highest values in the Free State are reported for the districts of Tirschenreuth and Miesbach with 1870.3 and 1680.4.
