Thuringia: Jewish-Israeli culture days in Thuringia

Erfurt (dpa/th) - This year's Jewish-Israeli Culture Days in Thuringia invite you to more than 50 events in ten cities. "Entertaining, approachable, surprising, sophisticated, authentic and danceable," is how artistic director Johannes Graesser describes the festival's program from March 8th to 23rd. "We give modern insights into the more than 3,000-year-old Jewish tradition and thus also into 900 years of Jewish life in Thuringia," says Graesser, who organizes the culture days on behalf of the Jewish regional community of Thuringia and the Association for the Promotion of Jewish-Israeli Culture.

In addition to readings, concerts, workshops, lectures, films, discussions and guided tours, a "Long Night of Jewish Cultures" is planned for the first time on March 11th. All over Bavaria, current and former synagogues will then be open until well after midnight and provide insights into everyday Jewish life. Among other things, a calligraphy artist will draw live in the Old Synagogue in Erfurt.

Ignorance, stereotypes and prejudices promote anti-Semitism, emphasizes Reinhard Schramm, chairman of the regional Jewish community. He therefore sees it as an important task to create opportunities to get to know other cultures, he says. "With the Culture Days, this is possible in an easy and friendly way."
