Thuringia: Lantern processions and devotions to Martin's Day in Thuringia

Erfurt (dpa/th) - Martin's Day is heralded in Thuringia today with numerous events. The religious festival commemorates Saint Martin of Tours, who, according to legend, shared his cloak with a beggar. At the same time, on Martin's Day - which is celebrated every year on November 11 - the reformer Martin Luther, who was born on November 10, 1483 and was baptized one day later, is remembered.

Thousands of people are expected again in Erfurt for the traditional Martins celebration in the early evening. This year's motto is "Living well together". Many families with children go to the cathedral square with brightly lit lanterns. There are also lantern parades in Bad Salzungen, Gera, Jena and Weimar. In Eisenach there is a children's and family festival on St. Martin's Day with squirrels to share and eat.
