Thuringia: Minister does not reject further operation of nuclear power plants

Erfurt (dpa/th) - Thuringia's Economics Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee (SPD) does not reject the continued operation of the German nuclear power plants. "We simply cannot afford the luxury of distinguishing between 'good' and 'bad' energy at the moment," Tiefensee said on Sunday, according to a statement from his ministry. Everything must continue to be done to prevent an energy shortage. There shouldn't be any bans on thinking.

The conversion of production to regenerative energies could at best be a medium-term solution due to the lack of availability of corresponding products and installation capacities, explained the SPD politician. A shutdown of power plants that are running and could help to overcome the energy crisis should "actually be ruled out in the current situation - regardless of which energy sources are used there."

As the minister further explained, the possibilities for companies in the country to save energy are very limited. Due to the lack of energy and the rapidly increasing energy prices, companies in Thuringia are facing existential challenges. Everything must continue to be done to prevent an energy shortage. Should the energy supply for the economy even be partially shut down, the economic and ultimately social consequences would be devastating.
