Thuringia: Seven bathing deaths from 2022 to July in Thuringia

Thuringia (dpa/th) - The number of people who drowned in bathing accidents in Thuringia increased significantly in the first seven months of 2022 compared to the same period last year. From January to July, seven people died in water in the Free State, according to an interim report by the German Life Saving Society (DLRG) published on Thursday.

By July last year, only one person had drowned while swimming. At that time, a five-year-old boy fell into a pool in Donndorf (Kyffhäuser district) and died despite attempts to revive him.

Most cases were registered in the summer months this year. But also in January two people drowned in Thuringia.

According to the DLRG, at least 199 people died in bodies of water nationwide by the end of July this year. In the same period last year there were 184 bathing deaths. The DLRG therefore advises caution and consideration when bathing.
