Thuringia: Students demonstrate against savings at the University of Erfurt

Erfurt (dpa/th) - Students and doctoral students at the University of Erfurt demonstrated on Wednesday against planned austerity measures. "We want the presidium to sit down with the country and work out a solution," said a spokeswoman for the student council on request. Due to cost increases for a new research building and the country's global underspending, an amount in the millions will be missing in the future. A university spokeswoman named an amount between ten and eleven million euros.

Around 200 people attended the protest event on the university campus. The concern of the students: The cutbacks could be applied to research and teaching in particular. For example, cuts are planned for a scholarship program for doctoral students. The students also fear cuts in many other positions for young academics. The result could be that fewer seminars are offered and that they will be overcrowded in the future, said the student spokeswoman.

The university senate met on Wednesday on the subject. The university spokeswoman has not yet been able to provide more details.
