Thuringia: the number of cattle in Thuringia has increased for the first time since 2018

Erfurt (dpa/th) - For the first time since 2018, the number of cattle in Thuringia has increased slightly. In November of this year there were 277,876 cattle in the state, as the Thuringian State Office for Statistics announced on Wednesday. The number of animals rose by around 2,100 or 0.8 percent compared to May this year.

The last time the number of cattle in Thuringia rose in a half-year comparison was in 2018 and has fallen continuously since then. Compared to the figures from a year ago, however, the number of cattle has continued to fall: compared to November 2021, there were around 4,800 and thus 1.7 percent fewer cattle.

According to the statistics office, more than half (56.4 percent) of Thuringian cattle are kept in large herds of 500 or more animals. The milk production breed "Holstein-Holstein" was counted most frequently, accounting for around 54 percent.
