Thuringia: Winter comeback: Isolated accidents with body damage

Erfurt (dpa/th) - Winter returned to Thuringia at the weekend. There was new snowfall in the Free State, but next week the temperatures at lower altitudes should rise above zero degrees, at least during the day, as a spokeswoman for the German Weather Service (DWD) said on Sunday. As of Sunday, there was 14 centimeters of snow in Neuhaus am Rennweg in the Thuringian Forest, according to DWD information, and it was even 23 centimeters on the Schmücke.

In the higher mountain areas it should remain frosty in the coming days. At altitudes below 600 meters, temperatures should rise above zero, but frost is also to be expected at lower altitudes, the spokeswoman said. This could make it smooth on Thuringia's roads, especially on Monday night.

The winter weather already caused minor accidents at the weekend - mostly there was damage to the bodywork. In Sonneberg, a 19-year-old left the road in front of a roundabout on Saturday and drove into a street sign. On another street in Sonneberg, a driver wanted to drive past a stationary car and hit a property wall. In Steinach, a driver skidded in a right-hand bend and collided with an oncoming car. In Neufang, a driver slipped his vehicle backwards into a bush on a climb.

According to the state police headquarters, there was no accumulation of accidents due to the weather in Thuringia.
