Thuringia: Zoopark: white rhinos probably died of infection

Erfurt (dpa/th) - The sudden death of the two white rhinos in the Thuringian Zoo in Erfurt was probably caused by a bacterial infection. Pathological examinations in two different institutions were unsuccessful, and no pathogens could be found in the analyzed samples either. "In consultation with various rhino experts, we conclude that there is a high probability that a Clostridial infection was the cause of the sudden death," said veterinarian Tina Risch, according to the zoo park's announcement on Thursday. The investigations are officially over.

According to the zoo, the bacteria can cause various diseases in rhinos, including tetanus. The pathogen can get into the animal's body through food, water or open wounds. In herbivores, certain clostridia are part of the normal intestinal flora and could, under certain circumstances, multiply excessively. In order to protect the two new residents Stella and Lottie from infection, the feed should be monitored more closely and the two animals should be vaccinated. However, the vaccination is not an insurance policy, as it was said.

According to the zoo, the rhino house has also been disinfected in the eight months since the death of pregnant rhino cow Marcita and her offspring Tayo. All wooden surfaces and all walls were treated accordingly. The leftover feed was disposed of and the watering system was cleaned and rebuilt. In addition, all brooms, shovels, wheelbarrows and brushes were newly purchased. According to the information, Stella and Lottie are currently under daily veterinary observation and are under video surveillance at night. Zoo fans should be able to visit the animals in the house from next week.

Stella and Lottie arrived at the zoo park in October. Both rhinos were born in England, Lottie at Colchester Zoo in early 2020, Stella at the Cotswold Wildlife Park between London and Birmingham in September 2019. When the cows are sexually mature, a breeding bull should be brought to Erfurt. Five animals have died in Erfurt Zoo so far this year. In addition to the two rhinos, two cheetahs and a lioness died.
