Electricity and heating: How to save energy while you sleep

Saving energy is the order of the day. And that doesn't have to be difficult. With these tips, you can literally save electricity and heating costs while you sleep.

Without major savings in electricity and heating, Germany will hardly be able to avoid the gas emergency in winter. The head of the Federal Network Agency, Klaus Müller, recently warned of this. He also called on private households to save, at least 20 percent would have to be saved. It sounds complicated, but it doesn't have to be: With these tips you can literally save energy while you sleep.

The right refrigerator temperature

The refrigerator uses electricity 24 hours a day - even at night. You can't turn off the device, but you can set it to the right temperature. It should be at 7 degrees Celsius and in the freezer at minus 18 degrees Celsius. In most devices, you can adjust it using a wheel. Butter provides a good guide: if it can just about be spread easily, the refrigerator temperature is ideal.

Avoid standby mode

Whether computer or television: Most monitor devices have a standby mode. Switching off the television using the remote control turns it into a secret power guzzler. Even with the PC, the screen is black in standby mode, but it still consumes power. Better to switch off the device completely. A good option is a power strip with a switch - so with one click all connected devices are disconnected from the power supply.

Timer for wireless router

Turning off your WiFi router overnight saves a significant amount of energy. Many modern routers have a timer where you can set the off time. Another option is a time switch socket, which ensures that the device is switched off at the desired time - without having to do anything.

Turn down the heating at night

Probably the most obvious step to save gas: turn down the heating before going to bed. While you are lying in the bedroom and sleeping peacefully, the heating in the other rooms does not have to be running at full blast. Important: You should not switch off the heating completely, so that the rooms do not cool down in winter. Because then heating up the next morning uses all the more energy. It shouldn’t be too warm in the bedroom either: the temperature for optimal sleep is between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius for adults.

Phone in airplane mode and pre-charge

Most people charge their smartphones overnight, so you end up waking up in the morning with a full battery. However, this not only damages the battery life of the device, but also consumes a lot of unnecessary power. It is therefore best to charge before going to bed and then unplug the charging cable from the socket. If you set the flight mode overnight, you ensure that the device does not consume any more unnecessary energy while you sleep with functions such as Bluetooth.
