The corona pandemic is over in the consciousness of most people. Only very few can be vaccinated, and large vaccine deliveries are still pending. The federal government would like to cancel the orders.
Germany still has to buy millions of doses of corona vaccines from pharmaceutical companies. For Biontech alone, there is therefore an obligation to purchase around 375 million doses of vaccine, as can be seen from a response from the federal government to a request from the AfD parliamentary group, which the Bundestag published. About 163 million doses of vaccine have been delivered to date. So there is still a delivery of 212 million doses to come.
According to the Federal Ministry of Health's vaccination dashboard, a total of around 223 million doses of vaccine were delivered by the turn of the year: 163 million doses from Biontech/Pfizer and around 60 million doses from other manufacturers such as Moderna. According to the information, more than 85 percent of the doses delivered so far have already been vaccinated. This means that around 32 million cans are still available.
It does not state what price the federal government paid per dose. This is subject to contractual confidentiality and may not be made public. After development and approval, Biontech and Pfizer sold their vaccine to countries such as Germany and the USA for around 15 to 30 euros per dose.
In 2021, the company, headquartered in Mainz in Rhineland-Palatinate, made a net profit of 10.3 billion euros, and significantly more is expected for 2022. Pfizer reportedly plans to increase the price to as much as $130 per dose when the current supply agreements expire.
According to the vaccination dashboard, there are currently around 7,000 vaccinations per day. At this rate, it would take more than ten years for the doses currently available to be vaccinated. The federal government is trying to cancel or reduce foreseeable excess corona vaccine deliveries. In December, circles in the Ministry of Health said that negotiations were underway to cancel or reduce the additional orders for 2023 and 2024 made through the EU Commission.
