Brazil At least 40 dead from heavy rains in Sao Paulo

At least 40 people died, 228 had to leave their homes and 338 were affected by heavy rains on the north coast of the state of Sao Paulo, the regional government reported this Sunday.

"The storm caused flooding and landslides" and "some access roads" to the north coast of the state are "blocked due to landslides," the Sao Paulo state government reported on its social networks.

The cities of Sao Sebastian and Bertioga, two of the most affected, have canceled the Carnival program, while rescue teams scramble to search for the missing among the rubble.

The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, visited on Monday the coastal region of Sao Paulo where the most intense torrential rains in the country's history left forty dead and dozens missing during the carnival weekend.

The rescue tasks were concentrated in the large municipality of Sao Sebastiao, a beach destination located about 200 km from the city of Sao Paulo (southeast) and which suffered "record" rains.

Lula, who was spending a few days off in Bahia (northeast), traveled to the place to fly over the disaster area where landslides destroyed at least 50 houses, according to an official video.

From the aircraft, rivers of muddy water were visible covering houses near the beaches.

The 77-year-old leftist president, who took office for the third time on January 1, later met with regional and local authorities.
