The war in Ukraine has been raging for five months now, and Russia shows no signs of stopping its attacks. The West is trying to put economic pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin with sanctions and thus persuade him to give in. Politically, economically and culturally, Russia is largely isolated - this is also shown by actions that actually only have symbolic value.
In the middle of summer and in one of the strongest heat waves that Germany has ever experienced, Edeka now wants to set an example in the freezer section too. The retail company is renaming an ice cream flavor because of the Ukraine war. Gut's own brand ice cream
"We are still very concerned about what is happening in Ukraine. It is important to us to continue to express our solidarity and we are convinced that this can also be shown with small gestures," said the supermarket chain with. Shortly after the beginning of the war, Edeka announced that it would remove Russian products from its range.
On Edeka's Facebook page, many customers react critically to the name change. "You show compassion differently," complains one user. Others accuse Edeka of discrimination against people of Russian origin and Russian culture or even "racism". However, according to the supermarket chain, the ice cream will soon be in the freezer with a neutral name anyway: "The designation 'Kiewer Art' is only temporary, in the long term the ice cream will only be called 'Ice Snack Sandwich'."
