The Popular Party confirms the economist Fernando Fernández as the new director of the Bank of Spain, replacing the resigned Antonio Cabrales. Party sources confirm to EL MUNDO his candidacy, which has no objections from the First Vice President of the Government, Nadia Calviño. Therefore, he will propose it to the Council of Ministers next Tuesday for his appointment.

Fernández, whose name this newspaper advanced this Friday, has, according to PP sources, "with a technical profile of recognized prestige." Born in Madrid in 1956, he has more professional experience and in key Bank of Spain affairs than Cabrales and is also more akin to the PP. The Government of Mariano Rajoy supported him in his day as director of Bankia, in the stage of José Ignacio Goirigolzarri, and of Red Eléctrica.

Cabrales resigned last Tuesday six hours after being appointed after losing the confidence of the PP upon discovering the party that had supported the independentista Clara Ponsatí in an academic manifesto.

The PP recalls that Fernández -whom he previously considered for the position- is an international consultant on macroeconomic, regulatory and financial issues, he was chief economist of the International Monetary Fund. In addition, he is a member of the Advisory Board of the Spanish Institute of Financial Advisors (IEAF) and of the Foundation for Financial Research (FEF), of the Bruegel Scientific Council in Brussels, and is currently director of the Euro Yearbook, edited by FEF and ICO Foundation. In fact, he has presented this yearbook in recent years along with senior officials appointed by Calviño.

He is also the author of academic and current affairs publications, has collaborated as an external expert for the European Court of Auditors and the European Parliament and was a member of the Committee of Experts for the Reform of the Spanish Tax System. He has also been Chancellor of the University of Nebrija and the European University of Madrid and director of Red Eléctrica Corporación.
