In order to achieve the climate goals, the EU wants to push ahead with the expansion of charging stations for e-cars by 2026. To this end, the distances between the charging points for electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles are to be significantly reduced.

According to the will of the European Parliament, significantly more charging stations for electric cars must be built in order to protect the climate. The majority of MPs voted in favor of installing a charging station every 60 kilometers on major roads by 2026. There should be hydrogen filling stations every 100 kilometers by 2028.

The infrastructure for alternatives to combustion engines urgently needs to be expanded in order to save the EU climate goals, said the responsible rapporteur for the European Parliament, Ismail Ertug. In the next step, Parliament and EU states must negotiate the final text of the law.

The head of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), Hildegard Müller, praised the decision: "In the upcoming trilogue negotiations, the federal government in Brussels should at least support the proposals of Parliament so as not to jeopardize the rapid ramp-up of electromobility." The EU must make it mandatory to determine the extent to which political adjustments are made if individual member states fail to meet the expansion targets.

In addition, sustainable fuels for ships are to be promoted. The EU Parliament demands that the maritime sector should reduce its emissions by two percent from 2025 compared to 2020; by 20 percent from 2035 and by 80 percent from 2050. This should apply to particularly large ships, which are said to cause 90 percent of CO2 emissions in shipping.
