Spain Unconditional prison and without bail for the alleged murderer of his ex-partner in Villanueva de Gállego

The head of the Investigating Court number 5 of Zaragoza has decreed this Sunday unconditional prison and without bail for Miguel Santiago Cortes as the alleged perpetrator of the murder of his former partner, María del Carmen Fernández, 39, in the Zaragoza town of Villanueva de Gállego .

He is accused of a crime of violence against women in the form of murder and the magistrate, after hearing his statement, has issued a restraining order for his minor son, as well as the impossibility of communicating with him by any means.

The defendant, 55 years old, has not refused to testify before the judge although his words have been confusing, since, apparently, he is aware of what happened on Friday but has indicated that he did not remember the moment of the crime nor did he know how to explain it due to to post traumatic stress.

According to some Aragonese media, he did remember having been in the bar next to his house before his ex-partner arrived, like every Friday, to pick up their 6-year-old son in common, but he did not to attack her with a knife and end her life.

Both the victim and the arrested person were included in the Viogen system because Miguel Santiago Cortés was denounced for mistreatment and threats and was sentenced to work for the benefit of the community. The sentence was accompanied by a restraining order from his former partner that ended on December 30, 2022.

Since the end of December, the situation between the two had apparently normalized and, furthermore, as explained by the Government sub-delegate in Zaragoza, Fernando Beltrán, during the time the process lasted, the assessment of the woman's risk was "not appreciated ', the lowest on the scale of five indicators, which is why the case was inactive.

The Villanueva de Gállego City Council declared two days of official mourning, from midnight on Sunday the 5th to midnight on Monday, during which the flags will fly at half mast in all public buildings. The recreational events organized by the consistory during these days have also been suspended.

Many residents gathered on Saturday in the town square as a sign of condemnation and a minute of silence was observed. A similar protest took place in the Plaza de España in Zaragoza at a call from the coordinator of feminist collectives.
