Tourism From 2024 it will no longer be necessary to remove technological devices and liquids at the controls of Spanish airports

Passengers at Spanish airports will stop depositing electronic devices and liquids on trays in 2024, since Aena is going to implement new 3D scanners at security controls that will allow luggage to be inspected with them inside.

As 'El País' has advanced and EFE has confirmed, the filters with the new technology will be installed first at the Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat airports, which concentrate 40% of passenger traffic, and will be implemented at the end of 2024 in Palma de Mallorca, after which they will be placed in the rest of the airports in the network.

Aena will put out to tender several tenders this year for the acquisition of new X-ray technology equipment that generates a 3D image, which will be operational at the end of 2023 or beginning of 2024.

The measure is part of a plan to modernize security controls at Spanish airports, with which Aena intends to streamline passenger flow and which also includes the deployment of biometric access systems.

It will also implement automated lines for the management of hand luggage (ATRS) and a remote inspection system (Remote), which allows security guards to carry out their work from a room, without the need to physically be in the security filter.

The ATRS allows suspicious bags to be separated from those that are not, and the management and return of trays automatically, without the passenger having to worry about them.

According to their data, in a decade (2018-2028) Aena will have invested 1,170 million euros in physical security, with the renewal of hold baggage inspection equipment and security filters.

The renewal of the hold baggage inspection equipment and security filters will involve the acquisition of 261 pieces of equipment, as well as the necessary works for its integration.
