"No more desire": Berghain in Berlin is said to be about to close

According to insiders, the world-famous Berlin club Berghain is due to close by the end of the year. A neighborhood magazine also gives the reasons: In the midst of Corona requirements and crowds of tourists, the operators lost interest. However, there is no confirmation.

Rumors about a possible closure of the Berlin club Berghain at the end of the year are becoming more concrete. The Berghain makers are simply fed up, reported the monthly music magazine "Faze Mag", which deals with rave culture and electronic music and is published in Wuppertal. The operators are silent on the rumours. Inquiries from the Berlin media have so far gone unanswered.

At the beginning of October, the Berghain booking agency Ostgut-Booking surprisingly announced its end, following the club's affiliated label Ostgut Ton, which has not been released since last December, reported the "Tagesspiegel". The booking agency will therefore lay off eight employees by the end of the year. A former Berghain employee, who does not want to be named, also said, according to the newspaper, that Berghain would close: "Since the corona pandemic, it has been clear that things cannot go on. The operators were only looking for a buyer. The end was in sight."

There have been talks with real estate investors who are planning to convert Berghain into a luxury hotel. Among other things, an investor suggested building a three-storey glass building on top of the bunker-like building in the style of socialist classicism. The man is quoted as saying by the Tagesspiegel that he doesn't know whether the operators of the club, who also own Berghain, have since sold the building.

An insider quoted by "Faze Magazin" has a similar opinion: "Berghain is closing forever! The final end will come this year!" One of the founders has already been paid out and is staying in the Brandenburg countryside, said the scene expert, without citing any further evidence. The "Berliner Zeitung" quotes a former well-known club manager in Berlin who is no longer active and lives abroad: "It is well known that the agency is closing. And I believe that the club will also close soon."

The Berlin media not only suspect the masses of tourists flooding the club as the reason, but also the Corona policy of the Berlin Senate. Behind the scenes, politicians are already getting the Berlin clubs in the mood for the fact that there will probably be no aid programs this winter, even in the event of possible club closures (or quasi-closures due to the obligation to wear masks indoors), at most for electricity and gas costs that are rising, writes the "Berliner Zeitung".
