State security determined: Explosive device with a swastika discovered in the Thuringian train station

At the weekend, a passer-by discovered two explosive devices in the Straußfurt train station in Thuringia. A large-scale operation by the authorities begins. The two homemade packages are rendered harmless. The investigations tend to be based on local perpetrators.

After the discovery of an explosive device in the Straußfurt train station near Erfurt, the police state security took over the investigation. Because a swastika was written on one of the two packages of explosives found, there was a suspicion of politically motivated crime, said a police spokesman in Erfurt.

The self-made explosive devices were found and reported by a witness next to the platform on Sunday. The station was then cordoned off over a wide area. The train was not clearly recognizable as the target of the attack due to the storage location, it said. A detonation would not have directly affected train traffic.

It is still unclear who deposited the objects with the explosive device there and why or with what purpose. The police are investigating in all directions, the spokesman said. Since the content had not been put together "professionally", the investigators assumed that the perpetrator was from the Straussfurt area.

According to LKA information, one of the explosive devices was detonated in a controlled manner, and the second was defused. Both explosive devices were functional, the spokeswoman said.
