Six martens delivered: Panzer ring exchange with Greece begins

A total of 40 tanks are to be sent to Ukraine as part of a ring exchange between Athens and Berlin. However, Greece does not want to deliver until the German Marder vehicles arrive. Now the first six should be on site.

As part of the ring exchange between Athens and Berlin, the first six German Marder 1A3 armored personnel carriers have arrived in Greece. This was announced by the Greek General Staff. The vehicles had been delivered the day before, it said.

Greece is to receive a total of 40 Marder infantry fighting vehicles. For this purpose, 40 Soviet-designed BMP-1 armored personnel carriers, which Athens had once received from GDR stocks, are to be delivered to the Ukraine. It was initially unclear when and how these armored personnel carriers should get from Greece to Ukraine.

The idea of exchanging rings arose shortly after the beginning of the Ukraine war. This should provide the Ukrainian armed forces with Soviet systems as quickly as possible, for which they do not need additional training. However, Greece had insisted that the German armored personnel carriers had to arrive first before sending its own equipment to Ukraine, lest the country's defenses be weakened.
