At a campaign event in the US state of Arizona, former President Donald Trump once again fueled speculation about a possible candidacy in the 2024 presidential election. "Maybe we have to do it again," Trump told supporters late Friday night (local time) after speaking about his 2016 election victory and again claiming he also won the 2020 election. To this day, the Republican refuses to admit defeat to US President Joe Biden.
Trump appeared in Prescott Valley, Arizona, to support Republican nominee Kari Lake in the gubernatorial race. Looking ahead to the fall congressional election and 2024 presidential election, Trump said, "We're going to take back the Senate. We're going to take back America, and in 2024, most importantly, we're going to take back our beautiful, gorgeous White House." Lake told Trump, "For the record, I think this 'Superman' is coming back. Hopefully he's coming back soon."
Since his deselection, Trump has repeatedly flirted with a renewed candidacy. In the United States, a person can serve two terms of office, whether consecutive or not. Trump would be 78 years old when elected in just over two and a half years. "This incredible journey we are on together has only just begun," Trump said.
Former Vice President Mike Pence also campaigned for Republican support in Arizona on Friday night, albeit at a different event: Pence supports rival candidate Karrin Taylor Robson in the gubernatorial race. Observers are taking this as the latest sign that Pence wants to distance himself from his former boss - as both could be eyeing a possible candidacy for the White House in 2024.
