Zelenskyj trip off the table: EU leaders come to Kyiv for summit

Amid massive Russian attacks on Ukraine, the upcoming EU-Ukraine summit is scheduled for early February in the capital Kyiv. The thoughts that President Zelenskyj's second trip after the beginning of the war could take him to Brussels are shattered.

Contrary to initial information, the summit announced by the EU with Ukraine will not take place in Brussels but in Kyiv. This was announced by the Ukrainian Presidential Office after a phone call between President Volodymyr Zelensky and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. At the meeting planned for February 3, the EU will not be attended by the heads of state and government, but only by von der Leyen and EU Council President Charles Michel. A spokesman for Michels had already announced this in December.

Since the summit is now to take place in Kyiv, speculation about a possible further foreign visit by Zelenskyj after his surprising trip to Washington in December has also ended. In the phone call, Zelenskyj and von der Leyen discussed, among other things, the situation on the fronts in the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, according to the Presidential Office in Kyiv. Ukraine's progress on the way to EU membership and the EU's financial support for the country were also topics.

In December, the EU heads of state and government approved new financial aid for Ukraine amounting to up to 18 billion euros. The money will be used to finance hospitals and schools, among other things. It is to flow in the form of heavily discounted loans in monthly tranches of 1.5 billion euros each. Since the start of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the EU countries have imposed numerous sanctions on Russia. In June, the EU granted Ukraine and Moldova candidate status.
