Cruciate ligament rupture already operated: "Hard blow" for DFB star Gwinn

The national coach feared it, but now there is certainty: National player Giulia Gwinn will tear a cruciate ligament during DFB training. The 23-year-old will be out for months. This is particularly bad news for your club, FC Bayern.

Martina Voss-Tecklenburg was right. Unfortunately, because her prognosis for the serious injury to national soccer player Giulia Gwinn was correct. The FC Bayern winger suffered a cruciate ligament rupture, just as the national coach had feared on Thursday. Gwinn sustained the injury in DFB training on Wednesday before the game against France (2-1) in Dresden. She had already been operated on Sunday, Gwinn and her club announced.

"Hello my dears, I don't really know where to start. As you've probably already noticed, I tore my cruciate ligament in my left knee on Wednesday and have already had a successful operation," wrote the 23-year-old on Instagram a photo of herself after losing the European Championship final at Wembley Stadium, in which she hides her face behind her hands in grief. The operation went "greatly". "It breaks my heart not to be able to actively support my team on the field for the coming months... but I know exactly where I want to go back to. I will take you on the journey and do everything I can to get back as soon as possible to be with my girls," Gwinn promised.

She had already torn her cruciate ligament in September 2020, fought her way back in time for the European Championship and played a very good tournament in England. She had been called up by UEFA for the European Championship team and had covered the most kilometers in the finals of any player. The World Cup will take place in Australia and New Zealand in July next year, for which the DFB team qualified easily.

"It's a very hard blow for Giulia, and we all feel for her," said Bayern sports director Bianca Rech: "We will support her as best we can and wish her a lot of strength." Gwinn's long absence is fatal for FC Bayern. With Hanna Glas, a defender injured her knee badly at the beginning of September, and the Swede will also be out for several months. The defense now loses another regular player in Gwinn.

With Marina Hegering, Kristin Demann and Carina Wenninger, three defenders also left the club. Although the Munich team signed two defenders, the Brazilian Tainara and Emilie Bragstad, the squad is rather thin in defence.

For FC Bayern it is about success in three competitions: In the Bundesliga, the championship fight with the defending champions VfL Wolfsburg should be exciting for as long as possible, in the DFB Cup the Munich team will meet their league rivals MSV Duisburg in the round of 16 and in the Champions League they were drawn into a very strong group. There they have to face what is probably the best team in Europe, FC Barcelona, as well as the Swedish champions FC Rosengard and last year's opponents SL Benfica. Gwinn will only be able to support her team as a spectator at these games.
