Four defeats in a row, relegation zone and performances that leave little hope for an upswing - before the second round of the DFB Cup, the crisis at FC Schalke reigns. Coach Frank Kramer is threatened with dismissal. It's obviously not just about sporting factors.
Frank Kramer starts his week of truth as a "trainer on probation". New names for the ejection seat at Schalke have been around for a long time, but after the somewhat surprising extension of the grace period, what may be the last chance awaits the counted Knappen coach. The cup duel at TSG Hoffenheim will probably become a job final. "That's not my issue," Kramer assured once again before the second round game in the DFB Cup on Tuesday (8.45 p.m. / Sky and in the live ticker on ntv.de). He does not deal with all the scenarios that are currently being discussed. And yet the eyes at Schalke 04 in Sinsheim will primarily be on the 50-year-old.
On Saturday, sports director Rouven Schröder and Co. had extended the grace period for their coach after a crisis meeting - despite the fourth defeat in a row, despite the fall to a relegation zone and disappointing sporting performances.
But those responsible rated the appearance in the league game against Hoffenheim (0: 3) as an improvement compared to the disastrous performance in Leverkusen (0: 4) - and possibly as a small glimmer of hope with a view to the mammoth task of staying up. Nevertheless, the signs are still pointing to separation, for the "kicker" and the WAZ Kramer is a "trainer on probation".
There is already a lot of public discussion about possible successors. Always there: Thomas Reis. The ex-Bochumer, who was only recently released from VfL, is said to have been an issue for royal blue in the summer. With a view to the million-dollar liabilities, the financial aspect will also play a role in the upcoming decisions at Schalke.
One thing is clear: Kramer, who was critically eyed by some of the fans from the start, has not yet managed to win the supporters over to his side. In Leverkusen, "Kramer raus" calls echoed through the arena, even after the bankruptcy at the weekend, the north curve called for the ejection. "Of course," admitted the coach, "it scratches you." The players, on the other hand, received applause.
In contrast to the fans, the sporting leadership apparently still believes in the turnaround with Kramer. A round of 16 entry against in-form Kraichgauer would be a big surprise, so the focus is not just on the result. Will, passion, but also a playfully more convincing appearance are required. But the truth is that the team does not seem to meet the high standards.
The focus, according to local media, is internally on the relegation battle in the league anyway. The game next weekend at the direct opponent Hertha BSC should therefore be more important. The only open question is who will then sit as a coach on the Schalke bench.
