"Got straight to the knee": Bayern loan causes discussions in England

Marcel Sabitzer is moving from FC Bayern to Manchester United in the Premier League on loan this winter. The Austrian quickly finds his place in the team there. In his fourth league game, however, he mainly produces material for discussion.

Bayern Munich's loanee Marcel Sabitzer caused a stir in the English Premier League with a rude foul. In Manchester United's 3-0 win against Leicester City, the Austrian international hit his opponent Wout Faes in the first half with his leg stretched and his sole open because he didn't have good timing in the duel. The Belgian Faes was able to continue playing.

Leicester coach Brendan Rodgers was very upset afterwards because Sabitzer had not even seen the yellow card for the action and the video referee had not intervened either. It was "incredible," said Rodgers, Sabitzer "pulled through" and went straight on the knee with a "straight leg." "I'll never understand how that can't be a sending off."

Former Premier League professional Graeme Souness even accused Sabitzer of taking the risk of injuring his opponent. "Ask any professional footballer, he turned on his side, that's a classic case of putting yourself in a position to hurt someone," said the Sky expert: "If it's not a dangerous game, then what is ?" Instead of being sent off early by the referee, the Austrian was allowed to end his working day after 80 minutes at the behest of coach Erik ten Hag.

The reason for the lack of a red card was apparently that Sabitzer's foul play did not have enough momentum or power to justify a dismissal without a doubt. However, United legend Gary Neville agreed with the decision: "I didn't think it was red. I felt he withdrew very quickly and didn't go through with the force necessary."

Sabitzer switched from the German record champions FC Bayern Munich to the English record champions on loan in the winter. Also helped by Casemiro's suspension, the Austrian quickly found his place in coach Erik ten Hag's team. After the former Real Madrid star choked an opponent on Sabitzer's debut against Crystal Palace and was subsequently suspended for three games, Sabitzer became an immediate regular in Manchester United's midfield after his first brief spell.
