TRIBUNE: optimism (tempered) towards the technology

Even in the 80s, the utopia of futurist predicted that in 2000 the cars volarían, that a robot would serve us dinner every night and that with a tablet we were going to learn English. None of this has happened exactly like that (yet), although have already been invented autonomous cars, there are applications that translate in real-time, bustos speakers able to maintain a conversation and robots that collect the clutter of a room.

The technology is to blame for such developments as these and other more everyday that have dynamited the day-to-day of many citizens. Watch tv, make a transfer, buy air tickets and read the newspaper, for example, are actions that are within the reach of anyone who has a smartphone with internet access.

The Social Barometer Observed, the result of collaboration between THE WORLD, EXPANDING and Sigma Two, examines the influence of new technologies in everyday life, in employment, in the classroom and in the innovation, and on how they perceive the citizens of this revolution. The survey was conducted through telephone calls and the data have been extracted from 1,000 interviews valid made older than 18 years from all over Spain. The margin of error for results is ±3.2% and the data are segmented by age, sex, recall of vote, income level, educational level, employment situation and family situation.

According to this survey, the Spanish have incorporated the technology into your life successfully, since 75.9% of the respondents feel comfortable or very comfortable with their use, while 21.2% feel little or nothing comfortable. Equally, it is favourable to your opinion with regard to the accessibility of the technologies. For 72% of the Spanish is easy to incorporate them into your daily life. Jose Miguel de Elias, director of Research and Analysis of Sigma Two, he adds: "in Addition to age, also the economic level, brand differences with respect to the ease with which you can access to them."

Elijah explains that, with respect to the actions of day-to-day, "the age turns to be a decisive factor, but also the formation: the higher the education level, the greater is the reading of newspapers by the internet and the interaction with their bank, for example." According to Antonio Asencio, director of Communications of Sigma Two, "are the young people that lead this pattern of consumption of communication, and who, to a greater extent, using digital media".

The consumption of television via new platforms is, however, more independent of age, something that is influenced by the simplicity of its use. "Companies are dealing with all. For the user it is easy," concludes Elias. So, young people between 18 and 29 years of age who watch television through different operators are 40.6%, compared to 30.4% of those older than 65.

The arrival of the internet is considered the fifth revolution, a transformation "to the height of which was the phone, for example, because it has changed the operating model of the company, has established a new way of communicating, of relating to...", explains Angel Barber, an expert on Innovation and Digital Transformation. In your judgment, makes it lack a certain perspective to analyze all of these changes and their influence on society, although there is already some analysis on the behavior in biodiver sity newsletter, on how they think the digital natives, in the way in which we manage the large volume of information that circulates, the fake news, their use to generate currents of opinion and influence in elections, etc ..

According to the poll of Sigma Dos, 62% of those questioned read the newspapers online. "Those who only access them via digital media are 38.4%," confirms Asencio, while 21.3%) only read on paper. For Barber, the crux of the issue is not so much the format, but the way in which you consume the information: "we Received a lot and in real-time, but no one has taught us to filter out sources true or if this is news that really have interest in. Consume a lot of news very fast that are, often, irrelevant. This gives rise to many perversions, such as the fake news"

therefore, education should play an essential role: "In the educational curriculum at the digital must be the work of backbone, not only through the subjects of programming," adds Barber.

The survey yields data rich with respect to the positive perception that, in general, have the Spanish with regard to new technologies: while 72.7% as believe that will improve your life, only 11.2% think that the will get worse. "There is reluctance, for example, related to Artificial Intelligence, because we do not know its scope. We think that robots will take the job... But, apart from the social challenges that can arise, there are more opportunities than threats, that before he sold ice went on to sell fridges. This is the same: in a couple of generations, the professional profiles will be different," explains Barber.
