Stuttgart (dpa/lsw) - In Baden-Württemberg, a total of 3,380 women and men were injured or died in accidents during the 2022 motorcycle season. This was announced by Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) in Stuttgart. This is an increase of almost nine percent compared to the same period last year. This year's season took place almost under the conditions of the years before Corona - and with the very best motorcycle weather, it was said.

Between March and October, 64 riders died, compared to 68 bikers in the same period in 2021. July saw the highest death toll at 19. There was a particular accumulation of serious accidents on Fridays and Sundays as well as in the afternoon hours, as the Ministry of the Interior further announced. In the past season, the total number of accidents involving motorcyclists registered rose by 9.7 percent to 4,155.

Strobl announced that he intends to stick to his five-point plan in the 2023 motorcycle season: defusing dangerous routes, strict monitoring, technology check offers, raising awareness of the dangers among bikers "over 50" and offensive public relations.

The ADAC recently pointed out that there is a risk of accidents for cyclists not only in summer, but also in autumn and winter. Because the sun was low in the sky, the light and visibility conditions changed. The risk of glare increases. Other road users now overlook motorcycles even more easily due to their narrow silhouette, as the ADAC announced. If there is snow in winter or the asphalt is damp, the risk of being dazzled by reflections should not be underestimated on sunny days. Therefore, the ADAC experts generally recommend a forward-looking driving style in order to be able to react in good time in an emergency.
