Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: BUND: Industrial agriculture damages arable land

On the occasion of World Soil Day, the BUND calls for better protection of the soil in the north-east. Industrial agriculture is primarily responsible for the current problems caused by compaction and erosion.

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - The nature conservation association BUND calls for an expansion of organic farming to protect the soil in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. "The increasing industrialization of agriculture is deteriorating the ecological properties and functions of arable land," said BUND agricultural expert Burkhard Roloff on Saturday on the occasion of World Soil Day on Monday. This influences aeration, root penetration, nutrients, water permeability and retention capacity.

Instead, he called for farming adapted to the respective location. According to the information, this includes, among other things, multi-row field hedges, autumn and winter greening and the cultivation of catch crops that bind nitrogen. This is intended to promote the build-up of humus and prevent soil erosion.

According to the Nature Conservation Union, 40 percent of the soil in the north-east is at risk from soil compaction, 53 percent from water erosion and 60 percent from wind erosion.
