Sassnitz (dpa/mv) - The northernmost city in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania - Sassnitz (West Pomerania-Rügen) - has a new mayor. As a spokeswoman for the election management said on Sunday, the previous head of the city's economic development agency, Leon Kräusche, won the mayoral election on Sunday by a large margin and replaced the previous incumbent, Frank Kracht. The Left-backed Kracht was in office for seven years.

According to the preliminary final result, Krausche got a little more than 2500 votes, which was more than 60 percent of the votes cast. Born in 1965, Krausche was supported by the citizens of Sassnitz and the SPD and was elected for seven years. Incumbent Kracht received 1,089 votes and a third candidate only 184 votes. Of a total of 8,300 eligible voters, 3,800 went to the polls.

In the city council of Sassnitz, the citizens of Sassnitz have the most votes with six people, the left and an alliance of SPD and an initiative each have four seats. The CDU has three seats, the AfD two seats and there is one non-party MP. Sassnitz is one of the tourist and economic centers on the Baltic Sea island because of the Mukran ferry port and the nearby chalk cliffs of Rügen.
