Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Wolves are spreading in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

Schwerin (dpa / mv) - According to the Ministry of the Environment, wolves have settled around half of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. "Despite the external influences on the stock, the growth rate continues to rise. On the one hand, this is proof of successful species protection, but on the other hand it shows that we are still facing increasing challenges in terms of conflict management," said Environment Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) on Friday in Schwerin. According to nationwide wolf monitoring, there are currently 18 packs, 6 pairs of wolves and 4 territorial solitary wolves in this country.

Backhaus emphasized that viable solutions for living together with the wolves had to be found. He also put the topic on the agenda of the forthcoming conference of environment ministers.

Between 2007 and the end of October 2022, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has so far paid out 200,000 euros in compensation for livestock farmers. The state has approved a total of 2.2 million euros for preventive measures since 2013, 1.5 million euros of it in 2020, 2021 and 2022 alone.
