After his death at 55, TV star Ant McPartlin paid tribute to his brother by calling him the "kindest and wisest man that I ever knew".

After a brief illness, Father Dermott Donnelly (brother of McPartlin’s presenting partner Declan Donnelly) died on Friday in hospital.

McPartlin tweeted that McPartlin would never forget the Catholic priest.

ITV's 46-year old presenter stated: "My thoughts and prayers are with your amazing family.

He said, "The world has lost an extraordinary man."

Declan, 46 years old, paid tribute to his brother Declan shortly after the announcement was made by the Diocese of Hexham, Newcastle and Newcastle.

Fr Donnelly officiated in 2015 at the Newcastle wedding of his brother Ali Astall. The ceremony was attended by a variety of celebrities.

He was a clergyman at St Joseph's Church, Stanley, County Durham. He recently celebrated his 30th year of service to the parish. His work with youth and ministry was his most prominent contribution.

Robert Byrne, Newcastle Bishop, said that Fr Donnelly will be "sorely missed" for his enthusiasm, energy and ability to engage all those who met him.

He stated that he was born in the area, and had grown up there.

Many tributes were posted to Fr Donnelly by those who knew him and had worked with him.

He was a supporter for the official aid agency of the Catholic church, The Catholic Agency for Overseas Development.

Monica Conmee, Cafod's head for education, said that the charity was deeply saddened to learn of his passing.

She said that Fr Dermott had chosen to be in the light. He, through his enormous talent and gifts, guided thousands of young people into the love and light God offers, and in turn inspired them to share it with others.

2014 saw Fr Donnelly appear on Songs Of Praise with Hacker T Dog from CBBC to answer viewers' questions about the church.
