Baden-Württemberg: Large nativity scene dedicated to the Three Kings

The Three Wise Men should not be missing in any crib. A show in the Schussenried monastery is dedicated to the wise men from the Orient and shows the range of types of representation.

Bad Schussenried (dpa/lsw) - Inspiration for your own Christmas crib will be available from this Saturday in the Schussenried monastery (Biberach district). A wide variety of cribs will be on display there under the title "The Wise Men from the Orient" until February 26th. The focus is on the three wise men. "In our crib exhibition, one encounters Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar again and again in magnificent robes with plenty of gold," explained the head of the monastery administration, Joachim Moll.

In the Christmas story, the three kings follow a star that leads them to the stable in Bethlehem. There they bring their gifts to the baby Jesus in the manger: frankincense, myrrh and gold. Nativity scenes are a pictorial representation of the Christmas story.

From the smallest miniature cribs to opulent large cribs with life-size figures, everything is included in the exhibition, according to the monastery. The cribs came from different epochs, countries and cultures from the private collection of a Schussenried family. Numerous customs are also discussed in the exhibition.
