Baden-Württemberg: Long-term study: Doing more sport in times of Corona

Karlsruhe (dpa / lsw) - According to a study, the Corona period has made people significantly more active. This is shown by data from the long-term study "Gesundheit zum Mitmachen" by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), in which citizens aged 35 and over from Bad Schönborn (Karlsruhe district) have been surveyed and checked at regular intervals for around 30 years.

In the Corona year 2021, around half of the approximately 430 participants moved at least 30 minutes five days a week. In the last year of the survey, 2015, only around 30 percent managed to do this. "The Corona period was a kind of "booster" for part of the population to exercise more," said Alexander Woll, head of the Institute for Sport and Sport Science at KIT, on Monday when the results were presented in Karlsruhe. This is a finding that is also confirmed by international research.

The study has been running for around 30 years. For example, the 1,090 test persons who have taken part have completed tests on motor fitness and answered questionnaires on physical activity and health. The scientists are researching the connections between physical activity, fitness and health in middle and late adulthood. The participants, between the ages of 35 and now around 80 years of age, are examined every few years. So far, this has happened in five so-called waves in 1992, 1997, 2002, 2010, 2015 and 2021.
