Baden-Württemberg: Nabu: Every seventh bird species in the southwest is threatened

All the birds are already there? For a long time now, this has only applied to folk songs. Because many bird species in the world are threatened with extinction. And numerous species are also endangered in Baden-Württemberg. This is the grim conclusion of a far-reaching inventory.

Cambridge/Stuttgart (dpa/lsw) - In the southwest, every seventh bird species is now threatened with extinction. "Even in Baden-Württemberg, the loss of birds is not leaving its mark," said Stefan Bosch, the State Commissioner for Ornithology of the German Nature Conservation Union (Nabu), on Thursday. A total of 27 species have already become extinct. "Another 28 species such as the partridge, whinchat and skylark are threatened with extinction and 15 species are critically endangered," Bosch said. According to his own statements, he refers to the not yet published Red List of breeding birds.

Globally, one in eight bird species is endangered, according to the latest State of the World's Birds report from non-profit international organization Birdlife. Every four years, the data of researchers, species conservationists and other organizations are systematically compiled in it. The number of animals in almost half of all bird species worldwide is shrinking, only six percent of the species still have growing populations.

Due to industrial agriculture, the varied structure in the fields with the edge zones, avenues, bushes and fallow land is disappearing, said the Nabu bird protector Bosch. "Responsible are also the consumers, who pay more attention to low prices and less to the impact of their choice on the whole structure."

Society is also directly affected by the extinction of bird species. "When birds die, that's always an alarm signal," said Bosch. The condition of their species says something about the condition of the insects or incorrect developments, for example in the agricultural sector or in urban planning, which will sooner or later also be decisive for people.
