The beautiful scenery at the start of the last training stage of the winter preparations did not indicate that Karlsruher SC was fighting for relegation in the 2nd Bundesliga. However, the lead to a relegation zone before the start of the second half of the season on January 27th against SC Paderborn is only one point.
Coach Eichner's happy mood is primarily due to the fact that KSC was able to clarify two important personnel issues. Midfield director Marvin Wanitzek will stay at the wildlife park until 2027, while veteran Daniel Brosinski signed a working paper with the Badeners after six months as a training guest. Apart from Lucas Cueto (torn ligaments), Stephan Ambrosius (hamstring injury) and Max Weiß (knee injury), all the players were available to the coach.
"It was a great sign from Marvin that he decided to continue on his way here. He's pushed himself to a new level in the last two years," said Eichner, pleased about Wanitzek's long-term commitment.
The 29-year-old himself also emphasized the feel-good factor as the most important reason for the extension. "If you look at my path here, it's simply been positive," he said. For the second half of the season, Wanitzek is hoping for a good start for KSC. "We worked very intensively with videos and saw that it was often the same mistakes that led to goals being conceded," he revealed. The number of goals conceded is what worries him the most. "If you extrapolate it, we would have conceded 60 goals at the end of the season. That's why we have to rectify the individual mistakes as soon as possible. That affects everyone. And I'll take myself on board with that," he explained.
Brosinski, who still played in a team with Eichner, signed as a new signing until the end of the season. According to Eichner, the 34-year-old full-back should increase the competition as an all-purpose weapon in this position. "It doesn't matter to me whether it's left or right. I play where the coach sees me or needs me. The main thing is that I'm on the pitch and able to use my qualities," he said.
The fine-tuning should then take place from January 13th in the training camp in Estepona in southern Spain. The highlight is a friendly against Red Bull Salzburg on January 20 (4:00 p.m.).
